Wrong Hand Only
MY THOUGHTS
Sometimes, even parents need the confidence to understand that it is ok to take time while learning something new. Wrong Hand Only, the latest book from Sam & Mi, reiterates this point in the most adorable way.
Ana’s mom has hurt her right hand and isn’t able to do as many things as she used to. Ana misses her mom feeding her and braiding her hair. When she tells her mom she misses her doing these things, Mom says she will try to learn to do as many things as she can with her left hand. At school, Ana has an opportunity to showcase how learning new things feels for her, and she uses it to show her mom how much she appreciates her learning to do things with her ‘wrong hand’.
This is a simple and beautiful story that emphasises how learning new things constantly can feel a bit overwhelming for young minds. But it also shows how being patient with someone learning new things can be very supportive. Learning new skills can be challenging at any age, and being patient — whether it is with a child or an adult — can go a long way. A student-led conference is something we can all relate to, as it is an annual function in every international school. The story is perfect for an afternoon reading or even for bedtime when your child has had a frustrating day. The illustrations are adorable! I especially loved the fun way the illustrator has drawn hair! Curly, squiggly, wavy, and held up with a spatula!
Sam & Mi create books that help build confidence in children and work on developing skills like problem-solving, empathy, and communication. I love their Great Writer’s Book, especially for writing tasks, and have used it for my own kids. Wrong Hand Only is another good book to add to your collection from Sam & Mi Books.
