Perfect The Way You Are
MY THOUGHTS
When my sister and I were growing up, there was a lot of pressure on us to conform to certain standards. Not going to lie, it was tough. For some reason, I thought boys don’t have the same kind of pressure that girls do. Boy! Was I wrong! As a mother of two boys, I am amazed to see the standards and expectations kids set for themselves these days — clothes, holidays, technology, looks — they do have it hard. Which is why, even though you may think the subject matter is trite, books like Perfect The Way You Are are necessary to have important conversations with your children.
Niyatee Sharma writes a picture book in verse and highlights the many ways in which children can be ‘different’. Whether you love playing outdoors or choose to stay indoors, whether you love being a girly-girl or choose to be a tomboy. Whether you are lactose-intolerant, vegan, dyslexic, introvert, no matter what you are, this book tells you in a beautiful way to accept who you are and embrace the ‘difference’. Reading this book with your child will be an amazing way to start a conversation about their friends and the differences they see (and battle) daily. Reiterating that it is ok to be different and still be a part of a whole is an important lesson for the kids to hear every day and one, we parents find difficult to talk about.
Chandrima Chatterjee’s illustrations are soft, beautiful, and add so much to the story. The illustrations capture the differences our children face both in exaggerated ways and in effortless panels. Her colour palette feels gentle and inviting, and you could spend hours just looking at the illustrations.
I am consistently impressed with books from DaffodilLane! I love the amazing, glossy paper quality and the cross-section of topics they cover. Emotionally appealing, gorgeously illustrated, and superbly packaged — every book from them has been an absolute treat!
