MY THOUGHTS

Going down a rabbit hole after reading a children’s book has to be one of my favourite past times! Reading Catching the Sun and Wind did that to me, recently where I spent an entire afternoon reading about the life of Anna Mani – India’s first woman weather scientist.

We spend an incredible amount of time discussing the weather these days, what with periodic smog/fog, unseasonal rains, and crazy weather updates. But did you know Anna Mani lived during a time when there was no electricity for her to read post sunset?

Catching the Sun and Wind is a micro biography that introduces children (and me!) to Anna Mani from Peerumedu, a small town in Kerala back in 1918. She was seventh among eight children and loved spending her time reading, discovering new worlds, and playing with her siblings. She was obsessed with getting electricity to her little town so she could read her books even after sun down. Her obsession leads her to study all about the sun, light, wind, and energy and she becomes a meteorologist. She realises the next big thing has to be clean energy and that modern electricity should not come at the cost of choking cities.

This is a truly inspiring story of Anna who turned her childhood frustration into a her life’s mission. It also introduces children to terms and concepts such as climate change, erratic weather patterns, and clean energy. This is a great book to introduce to your STEM bookshelf to inspire young readers to be curious about STEM topics and to learn about successful female scientists.
