MY THOUGHTS

Kiara Sharma is turning eighteen, and her life seems perfect. Surrounded by friends, her loving father, her late mother’s letters, and the endless possibilities of life ahead of her — what could go wrong? Except, on the night of her birthday, as she waits for a surprise from her friends, she turns into a red-eyed Katrol, a powerful, violent, rare werewolf! When she returns to her normal self, she finds out the truth about her mother, her best friend Krish, and an alternate world called Ordenia. Soon, she must decide where she belongs and who her family is now.

Kiara understands that in a world of werewolves, she is a rare Katrol – known to be violent and incapable of controlling their anger. Her new world, Ordenia, is under attack, and overnight she becomes Ordenia’s most powerful weapon. Will she be able to save her world and her new family, or are there more secrets waiting for her?

The Turning is an exciting, new Young Adult novel that is perfect for today’s teens. It has action, romance, hormonal teens, and angsty plot twists aplenty. I was excited because I think this is the first book in the fantastical creatures/werewolves genre to be set in India, in Mumbai, in (my backyard!) Aarey colony! Written by a 19-year-old Shannaaya Chopra, the story has a heady dose of emotion, plot twists, and action thrown in. It is dark, gloomy, and emo-like — perfect for the brooding teenager who enjoys reading apocalyptic, dystopian fiction. I am curious to know what influenced the author to write this book. Maybe, a podcast is in the works, soon. Stay tuned!

This is a gorgeous book to gift, with its hardbound cover, sprayed edges, and striking book cover illustrations done by Omung Kumar. As the story progressed, I did find it a tad too long and peppered with too many plot twists, but I am excited to see more books in this genre set in India. Do the broody Indian forests and tranquil beaches lend themselves to more young adult paranormal, shifter romance genre? Only time will tell! But, I am here for it, bring them on!
