The Egghead Detective Agency
THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY
MY THOUGHTS
Who doesn’t love a fascinating mystery that you know will have you on the edge of your seat? Collecting clues along with the sleuths and wondering whodunnit is what you need to fill rainy, no-outside-play days. The Egghead Detective Agency is exactly what the good Dr Watson ordered, but it is for that hesitant emerging reader in your house.
The Egghead Detective Agency, written by Pika Nani, follows close on the heels of her other successful detective series, Shrilok Homeless, which she wrote for children 9+. In the latest episode of Tell Me A Story, Pika Nani talks about how siblings of kids who had read Shrilok Homeless would come for her readings and ask for a detective series for their age and from that suggestion was born The Egghead Detective Agency!
The Egghead Detective Agency is run by two sisters, Ant and Tam and is mentored by the ghost of Mr Egghead, a famous detective. The girls collect clues and solve crimes, and their reputation as reliable detectives grows! From solving the mystery of the raining cupcakes to figuring out why their society pool is pink — these girls and their friend, the ghost, make living in Emerald Gardens easier and crime-free!
Gurgles (6) had never read a mystery before he eagerly started reading this one. He has now loudly proclaimed his plans to solve a few cases in our society, including the one where someone steals footballs! There are 5 cases in the book, and that helps the emerging reader take a break between stories to catch their breath. There are solve-it-yourself clues so the reader feels like they are a part of the story. The dialogues, setting, and characters are relatable, and the story never becomes too much for the young reader to grasp. The illustrations by Jemma Jose help the reader, besides being adorable, especially the expressions on Mr Egghead!
This is the perfect book to introduce your young reader to the mystery genre. Tune in to Tell Me A Story to listen to Pika Nani talk about how she comes up with these stories and why writing mysteries for young kids is an art in itself!
