Nani’s Walk To The Park
MY THOUGHTS
If I had to choose one Indian children’s book that every child (and adult) must read, it would be Nani’s Walk to the Park. I must have read this book dozens of times, and I still come across something new every time I read through the book. This is also the first book on my recommendation lists. Here’s why I love the book.
In Nani’s Walk to the Park, Venki wants to go to the park and asks Nani to take him. Nani is happy to do that but asks Venki to accompany her on some errands on the way to the park. This simple trip turns into a magical adventure as Nani brings the neighbourhood alive for Venki as they walk through Lane of Treasures, Lane of Beauty, Lane of Friendship, Lane of Mischief, and Lane of Magic before they reach the park. This book is a masterclass in celebrating community life and slow living. It forces you to abandon your stressors and just focus on the pictures in front of you.
Author and illustrator Deepa Balsavar creates a book that grows with your child. When you read it aloud to your little one, the story of a grandmother and grandson walking to the park intrigues you. Keep reading it as your child grows older, and you begin to have interesting conversations about what the child can see in each lane, what it means to be a part of a community, and the true magic of spending quality time with a loved one. The illustrations are rich, vibrant, and detailed in a manner that takes the reader on a nostalgic trip. Spend time spotting hidden details and characters around Venki and Nani as they make their way to the park.
I also loved the full-size map at the end of the book and want to frame it! This book is magical and wonderful in a warm and comforting way that only picture books can be. Make sure to buy this book for your library today. It is truly timeless.
