My Trip To La-La Land
THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY
MY THOUGHTS
The transition from picture books to chapter books is a tricky one, and very few books manage to capture the attention of an emerging reader. My Trip to La La Land does that perfectly!
My Trip to La La Land is about a young girl, Tavishi, who is forced to go to Ladakh with her mom to set up a school library. Her mother looks at this as an opportunity to travel, learn and give back to the community, but for Tavishi, this is her idea of what a summer vacation should NOT be. What’s worse, she is forced to be friends with a young Ladakhi girl who is the biggest chipkoo! Can this get any worse? Yes! A sudden turn of events forces Tavishi to rethink her role in Ladakh. Will she rise to the challenge, or is this all too much to take?
This book is an easy-breezy read and will have you laughing right through it. Tavishi’s rants to her diary are funny and relatable, and needless to say, this book was a huge hit with my kids. They were able to relate to Tavishi and “to all the boring family outings” we plan. Nandita Da Cunha is able to think and write like a 10-year-old girl, and that is probably the reason young emerging readers will stay glued to the book. On my podcast, Tell Me A Story, Nandita talks about why she chose the Travel Journal format and how that helps engage and intrigue young readers. We didn’t stop there! We talked about strong female characters in her books and how children are able to see signs of hope in any book — even when they are grim. There is also a rapid-fire round where she reveals her happy place and the children’s books she wished she had written.
There is humour, a heartwarming story, relatable characters, and so much heart! Pick this one up for your early chapter book reader today!
