Little Jagadish And The Great Experiment
THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY
MY THOUGHTS
In this world, mysteries abound. Books are not where all answers are found.” – Miss Pooja
With this line, Miss Pooja, Little Jagdish’s class teacher, tells him to stop looking for answers in books and to start creating an experiment to test his theory.
Jagadish is a curious little boy. He takes apart toys and gadgets in a bid to understand them better. His head is filled with questions, and he loves reading. One day, he wonders if plants can hear sounds. This germ of an idea grows until he asks his teacher, who stumps him by saying not all answers can be found in books. She encourages him to do an experiment to test his theory, and through that, he proves that plants can hear.
This book is inspired by events that occurred in the life of Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose. Sure, Miss Pooja tells Jagadish not all answers can be found in books, but what this book does, and does so well, is give young kids the push to question, experiment, and be curious. Written in simple verse and filled with adorable pictures of bespectacled Jagdish, this is a book that any child will reach for and fall in love with. Illustrator Debasmita Dasgupta keeps the colours bright and fills the pages with images children can relate to. This book also has two experiments and a small biography of Sir Jagdish Bose.
Talking to author Anjali Joshi on Tell Me A Story was like chatting with an old friend. She spoke to me about growing up with books that taught her a lot, but she couldn’t find anyone she could relate to. When she had children of her own, she sought to change that and started writing books with characters her children could relate to. There are scientists and heroes and legends in South Asia as well, and she is determined to bring them to Asian children worldwide. As a passionate STEM educator, she believes every child is born curious, and somehow along the way, schooling drills it out of us. This is her way of telling her kids and kids worldwide to be curious.
Perfect for kids 6+. Bring Little Jagdish home so your kids can learn about and look up to Indian scientists and be inquisitive. Isn’t that what we want from a book? Hey, the answer can be found in a book after all!
