MY THOUGHTS

Giggles was around 6 when he began playing football. At that time, I thought it was too early for him to play a contact sport and watched every match hoping he wouldn’t get hurt. The universe continued to have the last laugh, because Gurgles followed his older brother and started playing football when he was 4 years old. Now, I spend most weekends at matches and spend a small fortune on football socks and cleats. But it isn’t only football, there is something about any sport my kids will watch and this involvement is because we started them young.

The Little Athletes series is a set of three board books on Football, Badminton, and Cricket that are perfect for kids 0-5 years. The books titled — Little Footballer, Little Cricketer, and Little Shuttler talk about the game in basic terms. They cover the excitement of practice, the gear the players wear, and look at the most important terms in the sport. In the football book, the player talks about goals, boots, nets and line. Little Cricketer highlights bats, bowl, batter, bowler, four, six, and fielder. And Little Shuttler talks about playing indoors, court, racket, and shuttle.

There are so many things to love about these books, starting kids young in sports education has to be right on top. When young kids start looking at pictures and learning about sport, they are more likely to begin playing one as soon as they get an opportunity. These board books are sturdy, colourful, and designed keeping exploring babies in mind. They are perfectly sized to carry along on car rides or in a diaper bag. The books grow along with the child. Important words are highlighted in another colour drawing the child’s eyes to them and working as sight words. The book works even without a storyline because it intrigues young readers to know more through all the palpable excitement and action shown in the pages.
