MY THOUGHTS

How far would you go to find the one you love?

Would you travel to the ends of the earth to find the secret of life?

Finding Tree is the story of Nachiketaki and her close bond with a mangrove tree. She loves spending time with the birds on the trees, swinging from the branches, and discovering the secret worlds hidden between the leaves. But one day she wakes up to find her beloved tree gone. Paatikutti, her grandmother, says all living things are taken away by Emmeraja. But Nachi is determined to find her tree and travels to Emmeraja’s kingdom. Through this journey, Nachi finds out the true meaning of what happens when one loses somebody close to them.

Finding Tree is a story translated from Tamil and what instantly grabs you is the folktale whimsy of it. Geeta Dharamarajan is an acclaimed author and this is another brilliant book by her. This is a story that will engage audiences of all ages. Beautifully written from Nachi’s perspective, she weaves in innocence, love, magic, and empathy towards all things living and non-living through Nachi. We not only see Nachi going in search of her friend and companion the tree, but we also see what it means to lose a loved one through the eyes of Parrot who accompanies Nachi to find the tree that was home to her babies. Page after page, we are drawn into this fantastical world as we journey along side Nachi and Parrot towards Emmelokam.

Rajiv Eipe’s illustrations create intricate details within worlds. From birds hiding between mangroves to the thin threads of colour on the Whispering World bridge. From flying creatures in Emmalokam to the little detail of vibhuti on Nachi’s forehead, this is a book you should read once for the gorgeous story, and once more just to marvel at the illustrations.

Finding Tree is a book that deals with love, loss, magic and empathy — things we try and teach our kids daily. My favourite thing about Finding tree is it can be what you want to go be — a magical story or a warm comforting hug — it all depends on when you read it.

Perfect for children and adults.
