MY THOUGHTS

If we thought 2020 was tough, 2021 has been worse! Pandemic fatigue is real. Between parents battling unending uncertainty and children picking up on parental anxiety, our worlds and relationships have been turned to mush. Gone are the days when we shied away from talking about depression with our children. The need of the hour is to have this discussion freely and encourage our kids to talk to us when they feel “down” or “not right”. Wondering how to have the Talk? This book is a great way to start.

Who Stole Bhaiya’s Smile highlights the tender relationship between Bhaiya and Chiru. Chiru adores her Bhaiya and enjoys their playtime together, but begins to notice Bhaiya playing and smiling a lot less. She realises it is because Bhaiya has a new friend called Dukduk. Author Sanajana Kapur has beautifully highlighted how our family tends to react when one of their own goes through depression — from absolute dismissal to suggesting Bhaiya ‘walk it off’.

Written from Chiru’s perspective, the story really resonated with Gurgles (5). The story made him think for a while and then made him come to me to talk about it. He was able to identify with Chiru and understood what it means to be out of sorts sometimes. The simplicity of the author’s words lets young children understand without grownups having to explain, and therein lies the beauty of this book. The illustrations by Sunaina Coelho are so poignant, especially of Dukduk as it changes shape and form daily. Chiru’s smile and her offers of support are heartfelt and so realistic. The book felt strangely personal.

Definitely a book every parent must have in their arsenal during these times. I cannot recommend this book enough!
