A Moon Full Of Ants
MY THOUGHTS
Ever read a children’s book with exaggerated characters or themes, written in text that really doesn’t make sense to an adult’s mind? That is nonsense verse. Now, it is common to wonder why your child should read nonsense verse or what they will ‘gain’ from reading it. A child reading nonsense verse builds abstract thinking, gets comfortable with reading and phonics, and allows their mind to think of things beyond their creative realm. It shows them how to break free from rigid thought processes and imagine a world where anything is possible.
A Moon Full of Ants by Aparna Kapur and illustrated by Priya Kuriyan is a stunning nonsense verse picture book. It starts with a bespectacled girl who wakes up, stretches, and pokes a cloud that creates a lake. The lake then begins to follow her around wearing seven shoes! There are racing crows, disco-dancing rabbits, ants that live on the moon, and a former accountant-unicorn that lives in the girl’s teeth. Truly bizarre and truly wonderful!
Dig a bit deeper, and you will notice that Aparna Kapur uses everything a little girl enjoys and finds fascinating. Big bowls of ice-cream, unicorns, dancing and music, and even a favourite parent. The nonsense verse allows children to imagine the crazy world she has concocted, even making it believable for a moment. Reading a book like this gives a young reader confidence to create their own creative worlds.
Priya Kuriyan’s illustrations are magnificent and feel as though they up the ante for the book. From clocks flying as a cloud bursts into tears, to the two-headed dad racing after a crow, to sunglasses-sporting cats and roosters dancing at the disco– her illustrations allow a child to stretch their imagination to the extreme! The colours are bright and vivid, pulling the reader into the story and making them a part of the crazy world.
This is a book with a lot of energy and colour and is perfect for getting back on track from a midday slump. Also perfect for getting those creative juices flowing for an older child about to embark on a writing assignment. I loved the vibe and attitude of the book, and thoroughly enjoyed this Aparna Kapur-Priya Kuriyan masterpiece! Add this book to your child’s library today!
