MY THOUGHTS

Few books instantly transport you to a similar experience. Goplu’s Train Ride is one such book.

In this book, a young boy, Goplu, travels by local train with his Thammi. The train is the fastest way to get around Mumbai city, so Goplu is excited to be on this journey with his Thammi. Once inside the train, he holds on tight to the window grills and takes in the sights and sounds when he suddenly sees a young girl in the next compartment. Is this the start of a new friendship, or will the compartment grille deter the young children? Read the book to find out!

This book is an adorable story of a boy’s train ride and his earnest attempts to make a friend. The story is brought to life by Timira Gupta’s uncanny ability to write exactly what a child sees around them. As in Pishi and Me (an absolute family favourite!) Timira literally gets down to a child’s eye level and manages to write from their point of view without throwing a grown-up’s filter on it. The illustrations by Parmita Mukherjee transported me instantly to the women’s compartment of a Dadar local train. Women busy on the phone, planning their dinner, or catching up on the latest gossip — it was all there, painted in vivid colours. Gurgles (5) and I read the story and then spent a long time looking at the rich array of characters populating the background.

We thoroughly enjoyed reading this Pratham Book and urge you to get a copy to spend some time reading and bonding with your child.
