The Theatre of Ghosts
MY THOUGHTS
Ever pick up a book and find yourself getting completely lost in the details? When you finally finish devouring the book, you realise it is hours later and you’ve skipped lunch! This is that kinda book.
Pankaj Saikia’s wordless wonder The Theatre of Ghosts is about two girls, Junali and Rimjhim who set out to see a performance of Bhaona, a traditional folk dance drama of Assam. They wave goodbye to their mom and set with a little dog leading the way. Enroute they encounter boys wearing traditional masks and scare the girls. As they walk through a forest, shadows look menacing and it is the turn of the boys to be frightened! Will they reach the performance and what will they see there?
Every page in this book is gorgeous and will take your breath away. The colours add to the visual extravaganza and highlight the pitch darkness the kids are walking through. I had no idea shadows could be depicted so brilliantly until I read through this book! You laugh along with the girls and feel sorry for the boys as they encounter fright upon fright. The last few pages are colourful and delight the reader with their abundance of information told through tiny details like expressions and costume. I loved looking at botanical details like banana leaves, bamboo trees, and forest shrubs.
This book is a visual stunner and is sure to keep young readers occupied for hours. Use this book to talk to your child about culture and friendship. Definitely add this one to your child’s collection today!
