The King Who Turned Into A Serpent
THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY
MY THOUGHTS
A fond and vivid memory I have from my childhood is buying Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle comic books from platform vendors before boarding a train. I remember receiving a note from Uncle Pai and a Stories from Ramayana book for my birthday one year, which were among my treasured possessions! My only exposure to Indian Mythology came from ACK books and grandma’s stories, and I knew I wanted more.
Sudha Madhavan’s The King Who Turned into a Serpent is a concise book of 20 stories, power-packed with action, courage, and valour. These stories are awe-inspiring and will imprint themselves on your mind for years. On Tell Me A Story, the author talks about how her father used to tell her these stories and include verses from Sanskrit. She knew she wanted to pen these stories, but wanted to also make them relatable and fun for the uber-cool generation of today. All you need is one look at the contents page, and you can’t resist reading the whole book. There is a story about a king who was also a great cook, one who slept for six months, one with a golden hand, and one who turned into a serpent. The author was clear she wanted to tell stories of queens who made an impact on history on their own accord, and boy, has she picked and given us the best!
This book works beautifully as a binge-read or as a one-story-per-night bedtime read. Perfect for children 6+ and perfect to introduce young minds to mythology. Works great as a festival gifting item too! Be prepared for a ton of questions from your child because this book is sure to spark curiosity about Indian mythology. Truly a must-add to your child’s collection.
