THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY

MY THOUGHTS

Incredible Indians: 75 People Who Shaped Modern India is one of those gifts that keeps on giving. The school has decided to celebrate Legends month, working their way towards Independence Day, and my boys have had to brush up on their icons and legends for various projects. I don’t know about you, but very often when you ask today’s kids to think of a legend or an icon, it is always someone NOT from India. Sportspersons, actors, musicians, artists, why Rishi Sunak made it to a class list this year! While I hate to take away from their achievements, I find myself constantly pushing my kids to choose a legend from India. That’s why this book is my go-to this season!

Ashwitha Jayakumar’s Incredible Indians: 75 People who shaped modern India is meticulously researched and thoughtfully put together. This book covers everyone from freedom fighters to artists, thinkers to titans of industry, green warriors to social justice champions, and so many more! We have been going through this book learning more than we ever knew from our history books, and what’s amazing is that the kids have been so intrigued by some of the people featured that they have been curious to research them to know more! The book has managed to do the impossible –spark an interest in the minds of kids to learn more about a changemaker and instil a sense of pride in the formation of modern India.

Perfect for kids 6+, add this book to your kids’ collection today, and I promise you won’t regret it! In an episode of Tell Me A Story, Ashwitha talks to me about how she had 150 people on her list and struggled to bring it down to 75. She speaks about why it is so difficult for children today to feel the same pride we feel for our country and whether schools are really killing that love for history! I also do some prying and find out her favourite person from history, and even someone whose policies she simply doesn’t agree with! Definitely a fun episode, and you will end up learning a thing or two for sure! Tune in now!
