The Magic Couch
MY THOUGHTS
I read somewhere that it isn’t unusual for a parent to envy the relationship their child has with their grandparents. It is common knowledge that our strict, unyielding parents become the most loving, kind, and wonderful grandparents. My sons spend a lot of time with their Thatha, and his patience with their questions astonishes me daily!
The Magic Couch: Adventures with Thatha is a lovely book written in simple verse about a boy’s adventures with his grandfather, or Thatha. Everyone tells him that Thatha is old and can’t run, jump or play. But all the boy and his Thatha need are a couch and their imagination to take them on countless adventures! They travel to faraway places for magical adventures, and the young boy wishes his playtime with Thatha would never end.
This book feels personal as I see Gurgles (6) sitting on the couch with his Thatha having a deep conversation about buses and trucks, even as I write this review. Their bond is not something I understand, but I am jealous of it. The author zooms in on a beautiful relationship and reminds the reader that all children need is a patient ear and uninterrupted time. Illustrations by Sahitya Rani are bright, cheerful, and capture the innocence and exuberance of their adventures beautifully. The expressions on Thatha’s and the boy’s faces are my favourite!
Perfect for a bedtime read or when it is rainy and dull out, this book would also make for a lovely gift for the Thatha in your child’s life. Perfect for kids 4+, add this charming book to your child’s library today!
