MY THOUGHTS

Who among us hasn’t sat in a tedious classroom with the lazy overhead fan groaning, wondering why in the world we are learning whatever the teacher is droning on about? We have all wished we sprouted wings to fly away or had a sudden bout of diarrhoea to run away from the lesson — anything to escape the dreariness.

The Great Escape took me back to a time when thinking about escaping school and getting into mischief was cool, and you were quite the popular one if you had an outrageous plan! In this book, Sachit has been forced by his parents to move from Mumbai to Bangalore and is now at a school called Wunderkind Academy. He is constantly lost, has no friends, hates long-winded Math problems and yearns to be in the great outdoors. But things happen, and circumstances change when he goes looking for the bathroom one day. He meets Hari and Kris, and they have one common goal– to escape from school. Will they succeed, and how will they escape? Read the book for the grand scheme!

On the face of it, this Hole book may be about a young boy trying to run away from math and the torture that is his school, but ‘dig’ deeper and you will realise it is a story about finding companionship and wading through the muck we don’t like, together. Having a friend by your side, when you do things you don’t like, takes away the sting. Author Menaka Raman weaves a story so convincing it will strike a chord with readers of all ages. Her humour is on point and the situations relatable, making this book unputdownable! Illustrator Sheena Devaiah (shoutout to the statue and Rathnamma) add to the overall humour and awesomeness of this book!

When Gurgles (6) read this, he immediately decided this was what he was going to do in Marathi class. But then realised his bathroom has tiles, not dirt he could dig through. Giggles (10) loved how Sachit found friends, the bromance, and of course, the toilet humour. Moi (40) loved how the author has managed to take a simple school story and transport all of us to a time when we were Sachit, desperately seeking friends, looking to belong, and hating Shilpa’s math problems.

Add this Hole book to your collection today! Reading age 6-99. Laughter and hate for math guaranteed!
