The POFFS Collection of Funny Stories
THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY
MY THOUGHTS
Raising readers is a full-time job, and every parent would agree we could use all the help we can get.
The POFFS Collection of Funny Stories is a set of 5 light, funny chapter books that bring together stories, guaranteed to engage your child. There are multiple reasons this series works:
- It brings together stories about things and events your child actually cares about
- These are a collection of funny stories, so children will be engaged and laugh along
- This is a box set of five books, so as soon as your child finishes reading the first one, they can easily move on to another book without wondering what to read next!
- These are small chapter books with illustrations that are designed to help even a reluctant reader reach the goal of finishing a book
The POFFS series brings together a team of five writers and illustrators to create books that are unique and relatable to today’s readers. POFFS stands for Pets, Other Animals, Family, Friends, and School.
India’s original funnyman, Cyrus Broacha, writes P for Pets. Doggie’s Day Out blends his passion for dogs and humour to bring us a story about Franco, a GSD who is all set to solve the greatest of neighbourhood mysteries! But first, he needs to navigate a day with his crazy Hoomans and play nice with the fellow creatures. Illustrated adorably by Ayesha Broacha, this book will have you laughing along and solving clues!
Certified climate-worrier, Bijal Vachharajani writes The Cuckoo Capers for O for Other Animals. Once again, she employs her trademark style of bringing nature’s wonders to readers through gripping stories. In The Cuckoo Capers, the Mehta-Kamble household is a bundle of nerves and anxiety because it just won’t rain. They resort to crazy schemes and kooky recipes just so that they can hear their beloved pied cuckoo, the harbinger of the Indian monsoon, sing and announce the arrival of the rains. Subhir and Kiana play along with their parents and Nani for a while, but they have had enough too! Will it rain already? Bijal’s story is as funny as it is awe-inducing. Make sure to look for gorgeous illustrations of animals, birds, and the antics of the Mehta-Kamble household by Canato Jimo.
Sadaf Siddique and illustrator Riya Nagendra tackle F for Family with A Rizvi Family Winter. This story took me back to my childhood when summer vacations meant one long holiday with the cousins, where you were forced to interact and come up with games while the adults took a break. Sehar and Tanaaz find themselves in this exact situation when they are forced to spend time with their family in Solan, a winter wonderland. What follows are the antics of a house full of family members and strange sounds coming from the attic. I love that this story takes today’s readers on vacations from the 90s, where spending quality time with family came before all else.
Blame it on the Untz makes its entrance for F for Friends, written and illustrated by Lavanya Karthik. If you have ever struggled with a group project in school, this story will surely resonate with you! Poor Adi is forced to work together with Angira, Chinmay, and Faizal. How will this motley crew work together and win a medal at the Music Gala? Or worse, will they end up losing to that know-it-all, Risha? Also, what is the Untz and is it slowly working its magic on Adi? This is a rib-tickler of a book that reminds you of Lavanya Karthik’s Ninja Nani series!
Sanjana Kapur rounds out S for School with The Great Sneakout. This is an adorable story for anyone with a sibling in the same school. Ana is tasked with caring for her younger sister, Ira, at school. But she is not prepared for when Ira runs away from her class and hides under Ana’s desk! What follows is a hilarious but heartwarming story of school days and friends that make those years special and memorable. Special shout-out to Sunaina Coelho’s adorable illustrations of school children, their antics, and strict teachers. I especially love the one where Ana and Ira are holding hands on the first day of school.
I highly recommend this series to early and middle grade readers. Perfect for gifting as it comes in a little box set. Also great to carry along on vacation. Tune in to the rib-tickling podcast where the authors take us behind their stories!
