When I Met The Mama Bear
MY THOUGHTS
When I Met the Mama Bear is a beautiful story that draws parallels between the animal and human world. This is a lovely book for children who are curious about the animal world and a perfect accompaniment when you are planning a holiday to a national park with a safari. This book will offer a peek into the lives of forest guards and the amazing work they do. The story is based on a real-life incident that occurred in the Melghat Tiger Reserve
Priya is a single mother who takes up a job as a forest officer. She is posted deep in the jungles of Melghat Tiger Reserve and misses her daughter, Astha, every day. Her days are filled with longing for and counting down the days when they can be together again. Priya knows she needs to work hard to provide for her little family, but wonders if anyone else understands her pain. She feels alone in her plight, surrounded by the forest, yearning for someone to understand what she is going through. But an incident, late one night, changes the way she views her job. Priya and her team encounter a distraught mama bear one night. They find two bear cubs high up in a tree, and the mama bear is desperately trying to bring them down. What happens during this encounter forms the crux of the story and shows us how Priya finds a kindred spirit in the Mama Bear.
Author Prerna Singh Bindra tells this story with sensitivity and draws the reader in with empathy. She draws on her experience working with forest officers and navigating the terrain to write the story, transporting the reader deep into the forest and helping them clearly imagine what the scene must have looked like. The book shows us how animals care for their young just as humans do. We can understand the love, fear, desperation, and, finally, relief the Mama Bear must have felt through Bindra’s story. This story will give you all the feels and have you on the edge of your seat as the action unfolds.
This book featured in the Parag Honour List for 2023 and is definitely a must-read for children 8 and above.
