MY THOUGHTS

Anyone who has been following Mother of Readers knows I am a true sucker for a wordless picture book. And here is another winner! Kabaddi Kabaddi by Kabini Amin had me breathless and exhilarated by the end of the read!

Kabaddi Kabaddi follows the Pink and Yellow teams as they drive into the venue in their respective buses. With chants of Kabaddi, Kabaddi, being the only words in the book, we witness a spirited game between the teams. There are catches and near misses. Strategising and taunting. Teamwork at its best and individual prowess on display. Each spread is a riot of pink and yellow, and you find yourself supporting the teams as you eagerly flip the pages to see what happens next! Who will win the cup, and will the teams survive the rivalry?

I love this book so much for its buzzing energy that will keep the reader on the edge of their seat. The colours and expressions on the faces of the characters are so intense that they will carry the reader along without making them miss the words even for a moment. Amin creates vivid, textured backgrounds that mimic the Kabaddi arena, and her illustrations force the reader to look at the action from different angles, making the experience of reading the book an activity in itself.

The story tells itself, and all the reader needs to do is be ready to get swept along. The power of a wordless picture book is that a reader can understand the story at any age just by looking and following the action on the page. Read it multiple times and see if you can understand the rules of Kabaddi, or if you come away with a favourite character. Look for the beautiful details, like the rivalry between the buses on page 1 and how the narrative has been flipped on the last page, where each bus is enjoying a sweet treat in the opposite team’s colour.
