Jaipur Calling
MY THOUGHTS
As parenting tips go, here is one of my favourites. Always, always give your children enough information about the place they are going to visit. Never keep it a surprise. Surprises tend to overwhelm the child. Prior information helps them prepare mentally for what they are about to see. Now this tip works well whether you are taking your child to a new city or just out for dinner.
That’s why I loved Jaipur Calling.
This beautifully illustrated book by RoRo Books tells the story of Jaipur from its very beginning, as told by its founder, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh. We travel with the Maharaja from his childhood to a time when he tricked his own family to protect his people. He plans Jaipur, his magnificent Pink City, down to every last detail. The Maharaja takes us on a tour of prominent neighbourhoods, lets us in on myths and stories, and even treats us to Jaipur’s yummy treats!
Jaipur Calling is a complete tourist experience in a book and one that will help pique a child’s interest before you take them on a visit to the city. I enjoyed reading and seeing Jaipur through the eyes of Mahraja Sawai Jai Singh. It gave it a unique historical perspective! Author Veena Rao has managed to give enough information to pique a child’s curiosity, hopefully leading them to find out more on their visit. Siddhi Vartak brings the city alive with bold illustrations that fill every page with gorgeous colours. The interactive book has enough elements to keep a child occupied and will have them coming back for more.
I really hope RoRo Books is planning a book for every major city in India, which will make this an amazing travel series for kids! I hope you are listening, RoRo Books!
