This is a very special book, and I am so excited to see Indian kid lit having its very own Spotting Book! A spotting book is an interactive, search-and-find book designed especially to improve the reader’s powers of observation. These books ask readers to find a particular character or object amid pages with a sea of detailed illustrations. Where’s Wally/Waldo is a popular seek-and-find book series.
There You Are by Hitesh Sonar is a darling little Spotting Book, where readers seek and find Madhu, the bespectacled girl, as she makes her way across Mumbai city. She is stuck in traffic jams, on roads with Metro construction, at sea, and even in a bustling, busy neighbourhood. Finding Madhu by breaking through all the visual stimuli is a fun job for the entire family!
I love so many things about this book! Firstly, as a family we love seek-and-find Spotting Books. They are great to carry on long car rides, and this is one book that is a cross-section of life in India, making it so relatable for young readers. Secondly, the orange, blue, black, and white colour palette makes this a visually striking book. Third, this is a book for the entire family. Find Madhu, dare the next reader to find her too and keep going till the whole family is involved!
