MY THOUGHTS

Don’t Intrude On My Mood is a darling book about a little person with big feelings. The person in the book is a cat, but it could very well be the 7-going-on-70 person in your home, as it is in mine.

In this book, little cat is angry, no livid, because his friend Alex didn’t answer the phone. Words like “I’m raging, I’ll bite, stomp my feet, scream and shout, have a tantrum and leave me alone!” are thrown around, establishing all the things our body feels when we are really mad about something. But when little cat takes a second to calm down, he realises his friend is waiting for him to come and play! What a lot of time he has wasted being angry! What should he have done instead?

This book is a great way to talk to young children about their sometimes uncontrollable big feelings. What I really liked about this book was that it mentioned the physical manifestations of anger. It is so important for young kids to understand what is happening to their bodies when they get angry! The issue that was the cause of anger was relatable too.

Author Rea Malhotra’s story is convincing and relatable for kids. It is so interesting that there isn’t an adult voice calming the cat down. Instead, the angry cat cools down on his own and understands what he needs to do the next time around. Urvashi Dubey’s illustrations are adorable and add that wow factor to the book! Love how the little cat’s stripes get darker when he is angry!

This is a must-read book for kids 4+
