I Won’t Wash My Hair
Series: Hook Book
MY THOUGHTS
Books teach and then there is, I Won’t Wash My Hair by Aparna Kapur and Ogin Nayam that has been created almost in response to a global clarion call by kids so that they can shove said book in parents’ face and say, “See, she gets me. Why don’t you?”I Won’t Wash My Hair is the latest Hook Book and is sure to instantly become a favourite, because let’s face it, all kids go through a phase where they don’t want to wash their hair. In this book, Divya refuses to wash her hair because she feels that that time can be used more purposefully somewhere else. With the time she saved from not washing her hair for 5 days she dug a hole all the way to Chile. No washing for 9 days had her learning the language of ants and so on. She is so strong in her resolve that nothing can deter her, even Ameena Ma’am asking her to sit outside of class won’t get her to wash her hair. But very soon, her parents return from their holiday and she knows she won’t be able to go without washing her hair! She needs an idea and she needs one quick!
Aparna Kapur writes a book that will resonate with children everywhere and become a fast favourite! We had a good laugh at all the things Divya does with the time saved and came up with a few of our own. We also realised this is a great book to read aloud and role play, what with adorable characters like Ameena Ma’am and Alpa Maasi. The hyperbolic elements will have readers laughing our loud. Ogin Nayam’s illustrations carry the story forward and infuse it with so many details! Worms and ants in Divya’s hair, her crazy locks dancing about with a life of their own, and the beautifully delicate colours of the entire book are breathtaking.
Full disclaimer: I hid this book from Gurgles (who is going through a loooong no-hair-wash phase of his own) but he found the book and well, let’s just say a certain author can expect something rather ‘aromatic’ in the mail very soon
