The Little Prince
MY THOUGHTS
Everyone has a favourite book that they clung to through their growing up years, The Little Prince was that book for me. I have a copy that has passed the well-thumbed-through stage and is well on to the tattered stage, but I still read it every once in a while and take back something new from it.
Pratham Books brings this beloved French book to a new generation of Indian readers by adapting it into a children’s book with Anushka Ravishankar. Nanha Rajkumar is available in four other Indian languages in a beautifully illustrated picture book format. This is the story of a pilot whose plane crashes in the middle of the Sahara Desert. When his eyes open, he is greeted by a small boy, the Little Prince, who the pilot quickly learns is from another planet. They spend close to ten days together, where the pilot finds out more about the Prince’s planet, his beloved rose, and all the planets he has visited recently. Through all of this, he learns (and through him, the reader) that the most important things in life are invisible, that there are things that can be seen only with the heart and not with the eyes. This book tells a story of childlike innocence, impermanence, and most importantly, friendship.
Anushka Ravishankar adapts the story into a picture book format without compromising on the essence or the soul of the story. This format lends itself beautifully to younger readers. The illustrations by Priya Kuriyan are breathtaking! She has reimagined the Prince as Nanha Rajkumar and dresses him in flowing robes and a yellow scarf with Indian mojiris. Young readers will love the bright pops of colour and design, and as an adult reading the book, I loved the little nods to pop culture! For instance, the businessman on the fourth planet who owned all the stars suspiciously resembles a certain American President.
Pratham has always been a champion for creating relatable books for Indian readers, and this is their way of bringing a well known International book to a whole new generation of readers. Grab your copy today and immerse yourself in the tale of The Little Prince.
