MY THOUGHTS

We take so many things around us for granted, don’t we? From bread for breakfast, to a car to take us to school. From our favourite ice cream flavour when we want it to the TV show we are currently hooked to. Amidst all the goings on in our brain through the day, do we spare a thought for things that are just, well, there?

This is such an interesting beginning to a conversation with children. Once you have a list of items, turn your attention to this gem of a book — Travelling Treasures by Mala Kumar.

The book details how things or objects we see daily, made their way to India. Written in alphabetical order, she starts the book with Aeroplanes and continues with a varied selection —  Aeroplanes, Aloe Vera, Alsatian, Asafoetida, you get the drift, A? 😁 She keeps the tone conversational and engages the reader with tidbits they can relate to. The chapters are short and interesting and the reader takes back a bit of trivia. Jemma Jose adds quirky illustrations to the chapters making it a fun experience to flip through the book. The information is written so it doesn’t seem academic. The beauty of the book is it doesn’t have to be read linearly. Pick a letter for the day and read one chapter. Come back to it the next and pick another letter to read about. Doing a read-aloud to a bunch of kids? Quiz them and see how much they know about an everyday object! You can have endless fun reading this book!

Gurgles (9) loves reading non-fiction — the quirkier and fact-filled the better. He took to this book almost immediately and loved it. I enjoyed reading this book too and learnt so much from it. Did you know the word Queue has something to do with Wigs? Fascinating, stuff!

This is a book for curious readers. Make sure your child has a copy today!
